They have modified patients' immune systems to attack cancer cells of the blood (leukemia). Modified T-cells are turned into serial killers and are genetically programmed to attack cancer cells.Three chronic lymphocytic leukemia (CLL) patients with no hope to live and all options run out, participated in this study at the University of Pennsylvania where researchers engineered their T lymphocytes to attack cancerous B cells.
Carl June, a professor of pathology and laboratory medicine at the school’s Abramson Cancer Center, was the main lead author.“The actual trial exceeded our wildest outcome and imagination actually," says Carl June, professor of pathology and laboratory medicine, who was the study’s lead author, "because what we found is all three patients have had a remarkable anti-tumor response and that literally pounds of leukemia have been eradicated in all three patients.”
Two of the three CLL patients had a complete remission of their disease and there was a significant improvement in the third.
Modified virus
The T cells were genetically modified using a harmless virus, which carried an anti-body called a chimeric antigen receptor (CAR). The CAR was binded to another protein called CD19 that’s present on the surface of normal B lymphocytes and all CLL tumor cells.
Michael Kalos, one of the researchers, also mentioned that they bound a signaling molecule that binds to CD19 that would continue production of thousands of T cells that would act against future cancerous B cells should it return.
“We saw a substantial number of cells remaining circulating and in the marrow of patients very, very late after infusion, nine to 12 months, entirely unprecedented in the field," says Kalos. "And finally we saw that those cells, not only did they remain there, but they were able to be triggered, recognize and kill cancer cells when they encountered them again.”
The study can be found in the New England Journal of Medicine.

Astressin-B regrows hair long term; accidental discovery

A team of researchers from UCLA and the Veterans Administration were investigating the effects of stress on gastrointestinal functions. They were using mice that overproduced a stress hormone called corticotrophin-releasing factor (CRF). The stress hormone caused them to lose their hair as they got older.

Researchers studied the effects of CRF on the colon. They also wanted to study what would happen to the intestines if the stress hormone was removed. They injected a peptide called Astressin-B over five days.

They moved the bald mice back to a cage with their hairy siblings, and when they came back three months later -- they could no longer visually identify their original set of bald mice. All of them grew hair!

Subsequent studies have shown that Astressin-B can not only regrow hair but can also prevent hair loss with younger mice that overproduced the stress hormone.

The study is now published in peer review journal called PLoS One.

Study: Eating more fiber could mean longer life - USATODAY.com

New study: Smoking damages your body in minutes

The long term effects of smoking has been well known over the past few years as documented cases of heart disease and cancer has been well reviewed. Yet this old medical herb (and vegetable) does have certain properties that are unique. It does prevent fungus infection (tinea) and have some antibacterial properties.

But the real question is -- does it really help heal your skin? According to the most recent publication about the subject in the journal Burns, it does. The meta analysis entitled "The efficacy of aloe vera used for burn wound healing: a systematic review" was written by Maenthaisong R, Chaiyakunapruk N, Niruntraporn S, and Kongkaew C.

Based on the meta-analysis using duration of wound healing as an outcome measure, aloe vera group was quicker to heal, roughly 8.79 days shorter. The evidence supports that aloe vera could be used as a complementary intervention in wound healing for first to second degree burns.

Four studies with a total of 371 patients were included in this review.

New Randomized Clinical Study: Vitamin D Reduces Birth Defects

A new study is fighting an old myth that vitamin D can cause birth defects. In a randomized controlled trial, they assigned 494 pregnant women already at 12 to 16 weeks to 400, 2,000, or 4,000 IU of vitamin D per day until delivery.

They then conducted logistic regression analysis to see the influence of vitamin D in terms of gestational diabetes, infections, preterm labor and birth, and preeclampsia. (1) right lung, (2) spine, (3) left lung, (4) ribs, (5) aorta, (6) spleen, (7) left kidney, (8) right kidney, (9) liver.

Mesothelioma is a rare type of cancer that develops in the mesothelial cells that lines many organs and body cavities. The mesothelium (composed of mesothelial cells) is the membrane that surrouunds three of the body's major cavities and depending on what cavity it lines it is given a specific name. For instance, the thoracic cavity is called pleura, the abdominal cavity is called peritoneum, and the heart sac is called pericardium.

There are 5 kinds of mesothelioma cancers due to mainly, asbestos exposure:

Pleural Mesothelioma: This is the mesothelioma that develops around the lungs' linings known as pleura. Most medical cases are malignant mesothelioma which account to 70-75% of the cases. This is possibly due to the fact that many workers exposed to asbestos were breathing the toxins in.

Peritoneal Mesothelioma: This is the mesothelioma that surrounds the abdominal cavity's linings. The lining is otherwise known as the peritoneal membrane. An estimated 20-25% percent of mesotheliomas are of this type.

Pericardial Mesothelioma: As the name suggests, this type of mesothelioma forms around the lining of the heart. There's a smaller amount of cases, roughly 3-5%.

Testicular Mesothelioma: This is the rarest type with less than 1000 cases recorded. The cancer forms around the testicles.

Benign Mesothelioma: This is the only type of mesothelioma that a patient can fully recover from but it maybe a precursor of future asbestos-related issues.

To avoid these types of cancer, you must limit your risk of exposure to asbestos. Do not breath it. Do not get exposed to it without adequate protection. Consult a physician or hazard professional for more information on how to prevent it.

Is smoking marijuana safer than smoking tobacco?

There is a myth out there that smoking marijuana is less harmful than smoking cigarrettes. Let's take into account effects for instance. On May 12, 2008, 51 students were taken into the hospital because their school driver crashed their bus -- apparently, she was high on marijuana. Yet there are some, that still argue, it is safe to use marijuana if you are "alone" since it doesn't harm anyone else and it doesn't really harm you.

Recent studies have shown that there is a dangerous side to marijuana that people tend to ignorantly set aside or they have not been educated on it yet.

Mental Illness
A combined study by Otago University, London's King's College and the University of Wisconsin in 2005 has shown that daily or monthly marijuana users had a higher chance of psychosis, specifically schizophrenia and other mental illness.

More Toxins than Tobacco
A study published in late 2007 by the Canadian health agencies has shown 20 times as much ammonia, a chemical linked to cancer. The study also found that there were five times as much hydrogen cyanide and nitrogen oxides, which are linked to heart and lung damage respectively. However, in the case of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons, the toxin linked to infertility, the researchers found concentrations were higher in cigarette smoke. In short, if you want poisons and cancer, marijuana is the way to go. For infertility, you have a better chance with tobacco.

Faster Lung Destruction Than Smoking Tobacco
A new study this year published in ScienceDaily clearly shows that bullous lung disease occurs in marijuana smokers approximately 20 years earlier than tobacco smokers. At present, about 10% of young adults and 1% of the adult population smoke marijuana regularly. Researchers find that the mean age of marijuana-smoking patients with lung problems was 41, as opposed to the average age of 65 years for tobacco-smoking patients.

Lead author Dr. Matthew Naughton says, "Marijuana is inhaled as extremely hot fumes to the peak inspiration and held for as long as possible before slow exhalation. This predisposes to greater damage to the lungs and makes marijuana smokers are more prone to bullous disease as compared to cigarette smokers."

The type of lung cancer damage is also harder to detect as it requires a CT scan and X rays often times cannot detect it. This paper is published in the January 2008 issue of Respirology.

A seperate study has estimated that one marijuana joint equals five cigarrettes worth of lung damage.

Heart Disease and Depression
A more recent study in May 2008 has shown marijuana links and ties to heart disease and depression. Long-term and chronic marijuana abuse has been associated with adverse effects on the heart, says lead author Jean Lud Cadet, a molecular neuropsychiatrist at the National Institutes of Health, but scientists are only beginning to understand how the drug's impacts the cardio- and cerebrovascular systems.

Summary
There's overwhelming evidence that tobacco causes cancer and is bad for your health. Studies upon studies show this.

Now the focus is on marijuana as researchers continue to pour dollars into tracking its adverse affects. It is still relatively a new area of research, one that most marijuana supporters cringe on -- the spotlight is now on the supposed "safe drug".

Smokers have easier time to quit if friends do it too, says Harvard study

URL: New York Times

HOW TO QUIT SMOKING BY SOCIAL PRESSURE!

We know that smoking is no longer a popular habit in the United States, yet it is still prevalent throughout the world. A Harvard Medical School study clearly shows how the new social perception in the United States is helping others in quitting the ugly habit of slow suicide.

The study, by Dr. Nicholas Christakis of Harvard Medical School and James Fowler of the University of California, San Diego, followed thousands of smokers and nonsmokers for 32 years, from 1971 until 2003, studying them as part of a large network of relatives, co-workers, neighbors, friends and friends of friends.

It was a time when the percentage of adult smokers in the United States fell to 21 percent from 45 percent. As the investigators watched the smokers and their social networks, they saw what they said was a striking effect — smokers had formed little social clusters and, as the years went by, entire clusters of smokers were stopping en masse.

Happy Marriages Equals Lower Blood Pressure

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://2.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R-Rv_bhyaJI/AAAAAAAAAB4/do-yUiz8If8/s320/KarenWhimseyValentineMain.png" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5180388606894827666" />

Source Publication: Annals of Behavioral Medicine, March 20, 2008

In a recent study published in the Annals of Behavioral Medicine, there seems to be evidence that suggest there are unique health benefits directly tied to a happy marriage (we define marriage as the biblical man and wife).

Overall there were 204 married couples and 99 single adults in the study.

"There seem to be some unique health benefits from marriage. It's not just being married that benefits health -- what's really the most protective of health is having a happy marriage," study author Julianne Holt-Lunstad, a psychologist who specializes in relationships and health, said in a prepared statement.

The participants wore portable blood-pressure monitors for 24 hours. The monitors recorded blood pressure at random intervals and provided a total of about 72 readings.

"We wanted to capture participants' blood pressure doing whatever they normally do in everyday life. Getting one or two readings in a clinic is not really representative of the fluctuations that occur throughout the day," Holt-Lunstad said.

Overall, happily married people scored four points lower on the blood pressure readings than single adults. The study also found that blood pressure among married people -- especially those in happy marriages -- dipped more during sleep than in single people.

"Research has shown that people whose blood pressure remains high throughout the night are at much greater risk of cardiovascular problems than people whose blood pressure dips," Holt-Lunstad said.

The study also found that unhappily married adults have higher blood pressure than both happily married and single adults.

Holt-Lunstad noted that spouses can encourage healthy habits in one another, such as eating a healthy diet and having regular doctor visits. People in happy marriages also have a source of emotional support, she said.

Researchers seeking approval of cocaine vaccine

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R3yxICzReWI/AAAAAAAAABw/Uo2JhJgIcck/s400/cocaine.svg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5151186825554000226" />

Two Baylor College of Medicine researchers in Houston are working on a cocaine vaccine they hope will become the first-ever medication to treat people hooked on the drug. "For people who have a desire to stop using, the vaccine should be very useful," said Dr. Tom Kosten, a psychiatry professor who is being assisted in the research by his wife, Therese, a psychologist and neuroscientist. "At some point, most users will give in to temptation and relapse, but those for whom the vaccine is effective won't get high and will lose interest."

The immune system — unable to recognize cocaine and other drug molecules because they are so small — can't make antibodies to attack them. To help the immune system distinguish the drug, Kosten attached inactivated cocaine to the outside of inactivated cholera proteins.

More info: http://ap.google.com/article/ALeqM5h4s0F9Rn9z8SKqxJKy7C5XRrPPQQD8TTC2N80

Premature C-Section Causes Infant Breathing Problems

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R1_UmP2B_7I/AAAAAAAAABo/e1rNAHmMKMg/s200/si55550962_ma.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5143063053033668530" />

Source: WebMD Medical News
Summary: Medical Discoveries
Date: Dec 2007

Premature C-Section Causes Infant Breathing Problems

"Mothers who choose elective cesarean section should be aware that the risk of respiratory problems is four times raised at 37 weeks' gestation vs. full-term, intended vaginal delivery," Kirkeby Hansen tells WebMD. That is why we say you should never do elective cesarean section at 37 weeks."

Most children fully recover from these breathing problems, notes Emory University pediatrician Lucky Jain, MD. Earlier studies drew similar links between Avandia and cardiac risks.

The study analyzed drug use and health outcomes for 159,000 people age 65 and older treated for Type 2 diabetes in the government-run health system that provides medical care to all people in Ontario. Of those patients, 2,268 took Avandia.

The findings suggest that for every 100 people taking Avandia over a four-year period there would be five additional deaths, four additional heart attacks and three additional episodes of heart failure, Dr. Lipscombe said.

Mammogram checks are not as accurate

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R18iNf2B_5I/AAAAAAAAABY/ttR93qJegMo/s200/p30.gif" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142866914762162066" />
Source: Chicago Tribune
Summary: Medical Discoveries
Date: Dec 2007

2 of 10 cases missed in mammograms

Diana Miglioretti and her colleagues published a study with the Journal of the National Cancer Institute. Red wine, white wine, whatever health benefits you think it will bring you, is cancelled by increase cancer risk and other diseases.

"It doesn't matter if you drink red wine or white wine. If you are a heavy drinker -- more than three drinks a day -- you will have an additional 30% risk of breast cancer," said Dr. Yan Li, MD, PhD, of Kaiser Permanente.

Li and researchers looked at 70,000 women in a study from 1978 to 1985. They then analyzed to see if they had breast cancer by 2004. Women who drank one or two drinks a day had a 10% higher chance of breast cancer than women who drank less than a drink a day. But it took more than three drinks a day to increase that risk to 30%.

Shumin Zhang, MD, ScD, associate professor of medicine at Harvard Medical School did not participate in the research, but has also found that frequent drinking raises a woman's risk of breast cancer.

"Many studies have reported an association between alcohol consumption and breast cancer risk in women," Zhang tells WebMD. "The current findings are generally consistent with previous research."

In short, women aren't the only ones at risk. Alcohol is an equal opportunity killer, studies show that men are also in danger of increased chances of cancer if they drink alcohol.

Pork and other meats increase chances of cancer

People who eat a lot of red and processed meats have a higher risk of developing several types of cancer, including lung cancer and colorectal cancer, according to a new study from the National Cancer Institute.

In summary, red and processed meat intake appears to be positively associated with risk of cancer of the colon and rectum, esophagus, liver, lung, and pancreas in a new, large US cohort study of 500,000 men and women. But detailed data from both studies, plus another 14 studies, showed no heightened risk associated with long-term use of the drugs, U. S. Food and Drug Administration officials said.

Complete data showed that patients taking Prilosec had a lower risk of heart problems than patients taking a placebo. And findings from the ongoing Nexium trial found no difference in heart problems between patients taking the drug and those undergoing surgery for GERD, the FDA statement said.

However, Seligman did say that the FDA continues to investigate whether the drugs increase the risk of hip fracture. A report in the Dec. 27, 2006, issue of the Journal of the American Medical Association found that people 50 and older who took Prilosec or Nexium had a 44 percent higher risk of hip fracture than people not taking these drugs.

Curry Fights Colon Cancer, Skin Cancer, and Breast Cancer

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R10Hnv2B_0I/AAAAAAAAAAw/IjX1U8-zsns/s320/800px-Curry-spice.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142274728966356802" />
Treatment Based on Curry and Onions Reduced Precancerous Intestinal Growths

Source: WebMD Medical News and TIME Magazine
Reviewed: Dr. Louise Chang, MD
Summary: Medical Discoveries
Date: Aug. 2, 2006

In the study, published in the journal Clinical Gastroenterology and Hepatology, researchers evaluated the use of these curry ingredients as a potential colon cancer drug in five people with a rare genetic condition that causes the growth of precancerous polyps in the intestines.

The condition, Familial Adenomatous Polyposis (FAP), is usually inherited.

If the colon is not surgically removed, there is a 100% chance some of the polyps will develop into cancer, usually by age 40.

Each of the patients received 480 milligrams of curcumin and 20 milligrams of quercetin three times a day for six months. The results showed that treatment with the curry and onion compounds reduced the average number of polyps by 60%, and decreased their size by 50%.

Additionally, curry may have other benefits besides colon cancer treatments. According to a new study to be published in the August 15, 2005 issue of CANCER, curcumin, the yellow pigment found in the spice turmeric, which is an ingredient yellow curry powder, inhibits cell growth in melanoma, an especially virulent form of skin cancer that killed more than 7,000 Americans in 2002 alone.

Researchers at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center administered varied doses of curcumin to three lines of melanoma cells for different lengths of time. The result: apoptosis, a process that causes the normally immortal cancer cells to die like ordinary cells. And it happened whether the cells got a high dose of curcumin for a short time or a low dose for a long time.

How does curcumin stimulate apoptosis? It appears to work by suppressing two proteins in the cancer cells that would ordinarily block the process; curcumin is a sort of molecular double-negative. The researchers believe that curcumin could kill cancer cells, not just in test tubes, but in actual tumors, and they're now preparing for animal testing—and, if that's successful, for clinical trials in humans.

Breast Cancer Study
Curcumin could be of "tremendous value" if it's shown to be effective in humans, "but we're a long way from being able to make any recommendations yet, says researcher Bharat Aggarwal, PhD, in a news release.

The mice in Aggarwal's breast cancer study were split into four treatment groups: curcumin alone, the breast cancer drug Taxol alone, curcumin and Taxol, and no treatment.

The breast cancer cells were allowed to grow before being removed from the mice. Treatment started after that. Five weeks later, cancer had spread to the lungs of mice in all four groups. But the two curcumin groups fared best.

Less than a quarter of the mice in the curcumin-plus-Taxol group had cancer that spread to the lungs. So did half of the curcumin group. In comparison, cancer spread to the lungs in three-fourths of the Taxol group and almost all (95%) mice that got no treatment.
Surprising Results

Those results were unexpected, so the researchers repeated the test. This time, they let the cancers grow a little bit bigger before removing them.

After five weeks of treatment, half of the mice in the curcumin and curcumin-plus-Taxol groups had cancer in their lungs, says a news release.

"Curcumin acts against transcription factors, which are like a master switch," says Aggarwal. "Transcription factors regulate all the genes needed for tumors to form. When we turn them off, we shut down some genes that are involved in the growth and invasion of cancer cells."

Curcumin is being tested against a type of cancer called multiple myeloma and pancreatic cancer in early phase I clinical trials at the University of Texas M.D. Anderson Cancer Center in Houston. The researchers received 190 valid responses – for 83 boys and 107 girls.

Of those infants, 102 used baby walkers, with most starting use at 26 weeks of age and finishing use at 54 weeks. "Achieving crawling, standing alone and walking alone occurred later in this group," the authors state.

Walkers prevent children from seeing their feet while they are walking. "They are not getting any visual feedback. They don't understand what is happening," explained the spokesperson.

Another major complication with the use of baby walkers is that they train children to walk on their toes, she said. "Children are propped up in the walkers and their knees and hips are bent so they are walking on their toes," she said. "This causes tight calf muscles and they can turn into habitual toe walkers."

The problems can be ongoing. "I have eight and nine year olds that I still have to plaster up each year," she said.

Controversy has raged over baby walkers for some time. They are considered dangerous by many because children in them are able to reach items that normally would be out of reach. The other problem is that of children falling down stairs while in the walkers.

An analysis undertaken by the National Injury Surveillance Unit, based at Flinders University, showed that between 1986 and 1993 baby walkers were the highest single product category for injury in children between six and 12 months.

The Queensland Injury Surveillance Unit website supports this finding, stating in June 2000 that "given the dangerous nature of baby walkers and that they have been shown to be of no benefit to the baby. . . their sale and use should be actively discouraged."

The NSW Department of Fair Trading recommends that parents do not buy or use baby walkers at all.

Scientists discover how BRCA1 gene causes breast cancer

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R10Cmv2B_yI/AAAAAAAAAAg/YeARGSOsiRE/s320/cancer.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142269214228348706" />
Scientists discover how BRCA1 gene causes cancer

Source: Reuters
Summary: Medical Discoveries
Published: Sunday, December 09, 2007
Study Source: Dr. Ramon Parsons, Columbia University Medical Center, New York

CHICAGO (Reuters) - Mutations in the BRCA1 breast cancer gene appear to be linked with the loss of a protein important for putting the brakes on cell growth, a finding that could lead to new therapies, researchers said on Sunday... Researchers at Columbia, working with at team at Sweden's Lund University, now believe mutations in the BRCA1 gene can leave cells incapable of repairing routine DNA damage. When such damage occurs in a protein called PTEN, which regulates the growth of cells, cell growth is unchecked and tumors form. Women with faulty copies of BRCA1 or BRCA2 have a 50 to 85 percent chance of getting breast cancer. Mutations in these genes account for 5 to 10 percent of breast cancer cases. Most breast tumors are called estrogen-receptor positive, because they are fuelled by the hormone estrogen. About 20 percent are HER2-positive, because a protein called HER2 is involved. A third type is driven by the hormone progesterone.

"When it is mutated, it is no longer present in a cell. If a cut occurs in PTEN, there is no way for this cell to fix it," said Parsons, whose study was published in Nature Genetics. "It is like cutting the brake cable on a car," he said. "If PTEN is broken, you turn on a pathway that tells the cell to grow. It tells the cell to start dividing. It tells the cell, 'don't die."'

Parsons said loss of the protein PTEN is how breast cancer gets started in women who have inherited the BRCA1 gene mutation.

Physical therapy reduces hospital stays

<img style="display:block; margin:0px auto 10px; text-align:center;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/_MA9872P768U/R10A6_2B_xI/AAAAAAAAAAY/DS-2t6hNP7E/s320/PTpartialweightbearinggaittraining.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5142267363097444114" />
Study finds physical therapy reduces hospital stays

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C., Nov. 20 (UPI) -- Respiratory-failure patients who got physical therapy within 48 hours of the insertion of a breathing tube reduced their hospital stays, a U.S. study found.

Study leader Dr. Peter Morris of Wake Forest University Baptist Medical Center in Winston-Salem, N.C., said patients who received physical therapy had an average hospital stay reduction of three days, including more than one day in an intensive care unit.

Initial therapy, or passive range of motion therapy, was provided by nursing assistants, with their training designed and implemented by physical therapists, explained Morris. The nursing assistants flexed the joints of patients' upper and lower limbs three times a day, seven days a week. As patients progressed, they received more advanced physical therapy from a physical therapist, Morris said.

There also was no addition to total hospital costs because the salaries of the employees who provided the physical therapy were offset by reduced lengths of stay in the hospital, Morris said.

The findings were presented at a meeting of the American College of Chest Physicians in Chicago.
